If You Could Go Back

Edition 15 of Insight : Reflections on Mantra, Life and the Inner Journey by Jagannatha Das

Sometimes looking backwards teaches us something important about how we should live right now.

If you could go back in time, where would you go?

It’s an interesting question.

Most people probably wouldn’t choose a famous moment in history.

They would choose a moment in their own life.

A conversation they wish they’d handled differently.

An opportunity they didn’t take.

A person they didn’t appreciate enough while they were still here.

Perhaps that tells us something important.

We often think the most valuable things in life are money, success or achievement.

But when we reflect deeply, so much seems to come back to one thing:

Time.

Not simply because it is limited.

But because once a moment has passed, we can never experience that exact moment again. email-190225578621667008-179033…

I’ve never met anyone who wished they had spent more time worrying.

More time comparing themselves to others.

More time rushing through life.

But I have met many people who wished they had been more present.

More grateful.

More aware of the gift they already had.

Perhaps that’s one of the great lessons of spiritual life.

The past can teach us.

The future can inspire us.

But life itself only ever happens now.

This is our opportunity to love, serve, grow, forgive and connect.

Perhaps if we could travel back in time, many of us would tell our younger selves something very simple:

Don’t rush through it.

Because one day, what feels ordinary today will become a memory.

And what feels like another normal moment may turn out to have been one of the most precious.

We don’t always recognise precious moments while we’re living them.

Sometimes we only understand their value afterwards.

So rather than wishing we could go back, perhaps the real question is:

How fully are we living the time we’ve been given right now?

If this reflection resonated with you, feel free to share it with someone you feel may benefit from reading it.

Sometimes the right message arrives at exactly the right moment.

Come and Experience It

If these reflections resonate with you, why not come and experience kirtan for yourself?

Every Friday, we come together at OMNOM Birmingham for an evening of mantra, music, meditation and community. I also share kirtan at retreats, festivals and gatherings throughout the year.

Whether you’ve experienced kirtan many times or you’re completely new, you’re warmly welcome.
